Prioritize Meat Safety – Protect Your Family
Every year, improper meat handling, cooking, and storage lead to thousands of illnesses, some severe. These tips help ensure your meals are memorable—for all the right reasons.
Buying Meat
Always bag meat to prevent leakage, avoid meat past sell-by dates, ensure it’s well refrigerated, and check for tight packaging with no tears, punctures, or excess liquid.
Storing at Home
Store meat at 40°F or below, use a cooler if transporting, rewrap for freezing, and refrigerate or freeze immediately in a leak-proof container to prevent contamination.
Cooking Meat
Cook meat to the recommended internal temperature using a meat thermometer. Use separate plates for raw and cooked meat, avoid slow cooking frozen meat.
Eating Leftovers
Discard meat left out for over two hours. Use leftovers within four days, store in sealed containers, and refrigerate promptly to prevent bacteria growth.
